How to make links that last

This is optional for draft posts; editors can make these fixes to simplify links. Leave a “Note to the editor:” to let them know a page is time-sensitive or if it is behind a paywall.

For example change this:
https://www.amazon.com/Highest-Common-Denominator-Facilitation-Collaborative/dp/0990007359/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3NLSVNOA2TK17
to this (remove all up to “dp” and remove all after “/ref=”)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0990007359/

For pages that might change or vanish

  • Get an Internet Archive link.
  • Can you find the URL in the Internet Archive? Go to the Wayback Machine. Add the URL and see if you can find a copy that is near the date for the article.
  • If the URL is not in the Internet Archive, then click the “Save” button. When it is done get the Internet Archive URL for the saved page.

If page is behind a paywall

  • Can you find the URL in the Internet Archive? Go to the Wayback Machine. Add the URL and see if you can find a copy that is near the date for the article.
  • Can you find another location that is not behind a paywall?
  • Can you get a “share” link that will work for anyone?
  • If none of those can be found, print the page to a PDF file. Save the PDF file to a website that can be publically accessed. Get the PDF’s URL. Put that URL in Internet Archive Wayback Machine, and “Save” the URL. Get the IA link and put that in the “Archive Link” field.
